I remember that weekend of the disaster,and the events that followed after,,,the anxious families that waited for a sense of absolution that would not come for a number of the families that had loved ones that did not survive,Iff you are reading this blog entry and are one of the survivores from back then ,,then i hope that this entry will help you to regain a sense of peace in your heart as  you remember that terrible day back in 1968.I remember that terrible week of disasters back then over that Easter weekend,as two weather systems clashed in the lower north island and whipped up the cook straight and turned it into a disaster zone.I remember it quite clearly as iff it were just yesterday, i was 8 years old at the time and my father had been in the south island for two weeks and was booked to travel back on the wahini. Meanwhile back home here in hawkes bay we as a family waited in fear for our fathers life as we had not herd from him and assumed that he was on the ship on that particular sailing. We had re decorated the inside of the house as a surprise for him on his return,,,but now it seemed he was not going to be there to see it all. The phone call came through from my father from christchurch later that he was booked to sail on that sailing but had missed the train to meet the ferry. We didn’t have a phone so the call was taken at our next door neighboures place and i still to this day remember the look of relief on my mothers face when she returned to tell us that he was alive. But for those 53 other families who did lose their lives or loved ones that same phone call did not bring good news, but terrible grief instead.
